I think that most, though not all, fanfiction writers strive to make their works as close to the canon as possible. This means trying to match character personalities, getting the world just write, and all kinds of other things. But everybody makes mistakes, of course, and it's damn near impossible to make your fan story 100% accurate to the fandom you're writing for.
